Abstract

Peritonitis is one of the most important acute complications in peritoneal dialysis patients and one of the most common complications for loss of membrane and technical challenging in renal replacement therapy. Peritoneal dialysis began in 1969 in the former Social Security Hospital, the program currently has 177 patients. The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of and to identify the most common bacteria and antibiogram to be used. Materials and methods: we performed a retrospective epidemiological study from january 2010 to december 2012. We analyzed microorganisms causing peritonitis, antibiotic sensitivity and removal of catheters and peritonitis frequency by gender. Results: the peritoneal dialysis program has 177 patients, 145 in automated peritoneal dialysis (APD), 35 continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), 87 patients presented symptoms of peritonitis, 38 women, 49 men, the Gram positive were
the most Frequently, 59 (57.5%), Gram negative 13 (14.9%), fungal infections 3 (3.4%), without developing crops 24 (24.1%). According to the drugs used were ceftazidime 27.59%, vancomycin 24.14%, ciprofloxacin 24.14%, ampicillin 3.45% and fluconazole 3.45%, at 24; 14% of patients had negative cultures and the antibiotic was suspended, six catheters were removed due to Candida albicans infection, 1 with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 1 with meticilin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and 1 with recurrent Staphylococcus epidermidis infection. Conclusions: similar to the reported in the literature, in our study Gram positive are the most frequently identified organism.
