INTRODUCTION. Subarachnoid hemorrhage represents 5 to 10% of cerebral vascular diseases, affecting middle-aged people with impact on their functional capacity, therefore it is important to know the characteristics of this pathology in Ecuador. OBJECTIVE. To identify the clinical and epidemiological characteristics associated with mortality due to spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage secondary to cerebral vascular malformations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS. Cross-sectional descriptive study. Population of 14 167 and sample of 604 patients with diagnosis of spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage or intraparenchymal hemorrhage, from the Medical Units of neurosurgery or neurology of 3 hospitals in Quito during the period January 01, 2014 to August 31, 2019. Inclusion criteria were: men and women over 18 years of age, evidenced by imaging studies. Exclusion criteria were: patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage or traumatic intraparenchymal hemorrhage and/or recent use of anticoagulants. For bivariate analysis, Chi-square test with a p<0,05 was used for the bivariate analysis. RESULTS. Minimum age was 18 years, maximum age 96 and mean 51,4. Aneurysmal hemorrhage was caused by the middle cerebral artery in 31,8%. Mortality was 14,2%, with 60,5% in women and 39,5% in men. CONCLUSIONS. One third of patients had a poor evolution after a subarachnoid hemorrhage, although mortality was similar to other countries, affecting quality of life and functionality.
