Assessment of the quality of clinical practice guidelines on the treatment of adults with mild or moderate COVID-19, using the AGREE II tool. Cambios rev. méd. [Internet]. 2024 Jul. 8 [cited 2025 Oct. 8];23(1):e962. Available from: https://revistahcam.iess.gob.ec/index.php/cambios/article/view/962

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Several clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of COVID-19 have been developed over the last two years of the pandemic; however, their methodological quality remains unclear. JUSTIFICATION: During the pandemic, multiple guidelines emerged, but clarity regarding their methodological quality was limited. OBJECTIVE: To systematically assess the quality of clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of COVID-19 published from 2021 to September 2022, using the AGREE II tool. METHODS: A systematic search of clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of mild or moderate COVID-19 was conducted using medical databases and websites of health organizations. The selected guidelines were evaluated using the AGREE II instrument. RESULTS: Eleven clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) were evaluated, showing high scores in the domains of scope and purpose (98.74%), stakeholder involvement (97.22%), rigor of development (92%), clarity of presentation (100%), applicability (85.61%), and editorial independence (100%). Although the overall quality of the guidelines was high, there was identified a need for improvement in the areas of rigor of development and applicability of the recommendations. CONCLUSIONS: We found that the quality of the evaluated clinical practice guidelines is predominantly high, and therefore, they are recommendable. However, we recognize the need to improve the descriptions of the domains of rigor of development and applicability of the recommendations.
