Abstract

Introduction: cancer is the leading cause of death in developed countries and the second leading cause in developing countries, as is the case in Ecuador. Objective: to determine the number of patients evaluated in the Oncology Department of the HCAM as new cases, and analyze the ten most common types of cancers in the last 10 years. Materials and methods: it is a prevalence study to determine in order of frequency the cancers in the Carlos Andrade Marin Hospital Oncology Service from 2000 to 2011. Results: the total number of patients, with cancer, that were assessed as new cases in the last ten years was 6.298. The prevalence of the 10 most common cancers were: • Breast cancer: 1685 (27%) • Gastric cancer: 772 (12%) • Non-Hodgkin Lymphomas: 722 (11%) • Cancer of the colon and rectum: 606 (10%) • Prostate Cancer: 597 (9%) • Cancer of the cervix: 533 (9%) • Lung cancer: 445 (7%) • Central Nervous System: 364 (6%) • Skin Cancer 312 (5%) • Soft tissue sarcomas: 263 (4%) Discussion: the study shows that the prevalence of cancer in the Oncology Department of the Carlos Andrade Marin Hospital has tripled in the last ten years. Conclusion: the information obtain with this study compares with that of the WHO, who sustains that in developing countries cancer is the second leading cause of death, and the percentage of new patients diagnosed with cancer has increased of signifcant form.
