Abstract

Introduction: The main goal of this study was reviewing the times employed in surgery, anesthesia and the operating room of patientes attended in a third level hospital. Methods: Descriptive study of the surgical activity carried out at Carlos Andrade Marín Hospital, from January 2015 to June 2017. From 64 288 registries received only 37 351 were finally analyzed since registries containing errors and duplicates were excluded. ANOVA for repeated measures was used to analyze surgical times. A p-value <0.05 was considered significant. Statistical packages JASP, R and EpiInfo 7 were employed. Results: Time distributions were skewed to the right, therefore, the median was employed. Differences were significant among them. The largest number of surgeries belonged to General Surgery (15.7%), Obstetrics (15%), Ortopedics (15%) and Ginecology (15%). The busiest operating rooms were: number 6 (16.7%) and number 14 (13.5%). Discussion: Among the problems detected, the lack of registration of surgical times reached almost 30%, plus 10% of registration errors. Therefore, we discarded around 48% of the received data. The limitations of the available data, unfortunately did not allow us to fully analyze operating room activities, therefore, we need to improve the registration of surgical activities.
