Abstract

Cryptococcosis is a fungal disease with global distribution. The cause is generally the reactivation of a latent infection in immunosuppressed patients, months or years after the initial exposure. Cryptococcemia is the clearest manifestation of disseminated disease and is associated with a high percentage of cryptococcal meningitis.

The case of a 25-year-old woman with a recent diagnosis of HIV infection is presented, whose predominant symptoms were chronic diarrhea with significant weight loss and fever, with few neurological manifestations. Due to persistence of fever, blood cultures were performed with the isolation of Cryptococcus and subsequently a lumbar puncture with the same microbiological growth in cerebrospinal fluid. For this reason, a case of disseminated cryptococcosis in an immunosuppressed patient was considered.
