The Anesthesiology is a strong medical - surgical specialty. It views the patient from the perioperative standpoint, integrating the anesthesiologist in preoperative evaluation and preparation. The likelihood of complications in the operating room is directly related to the pathology and the clinical condition of the patient for surgery. According to OMS, we intervene surgically to 4% of the world’s population (234 million). Seven million of these surgeries have complications or adverse outcomes, and one million of them die during or immediately after surgery. A descriptive study was conducted at Hospital Carlos Andrade Marín (HCAM) to report the num ber of complications in the operating room during one year. The num ber of surgical procedures performed in the operating room HCAM in the period December 2011 to November 2012 was 18,246. 14,113 were scheduled surgical procedures and 5950 were emergencies procedures. There were 25 cases, (0.13%) or complications related to incidents, 15 (0.1%) cases occurred within scheduled surgeries and 10 (0.16%) cases in emergency surgeries. Mortality was 28% (7 deaths), of which 3 cases were related to anesthetic management, namely
aspiration in patients with intestinal obstruction and in poor condition (1,16:10.000 cases) who died in days of surgery, the remaining cases have been linked to other causes not necessarily related to anesthesia (2,19:10.000 cases). It can be concluded that there is not a culture of reporting complications, either for fear of criticism or simply careless, skewing the data and information provided.
