INTRODUCTION. In pediatric clinical practice, epidemiology is a complementary knowledge for management decision-making in administration and management in Health. OBJECTIVE. Characterize the epidemiology of the Pediatric Service of General Ambato Hospital of the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute. MATERIALS AND
METHODS. Retrospective and analytical study with population and known sample of 3,244 patients attended at General Ambato Hospital of the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security, from january 2015 to december 2016. RESULTS. 50,86% (1 650; 3 244) of hospital admissions correspond to the male sex, especially for school-age patients. A greater number of admissions was evidenced in the months of March (155; 1 548), May (146; 1 548) and August (133; 1 548). The first 10 causes of morbidity were: pneumonia, acute diarrhoea, acute appendicitis, urinary tract infection, upperrespiratory infection, fractures, traumatic brain injury, convulsive syndrome. The main cause of morbidity was pneumonia, which presented 15,29% (496; 3 244) in the preschool boys and older infants, with the highest incidence in the months of February, march and april, with a probability of 30,59% if pneumonia developed if the weight was below the 3rd percentile, the average stay of hospitalized patients was 3,98 days. CONCLUSION. Pneumonia was the main cause of admission, with a highest incidence in the coldest periods of the year and dominated by male, with a probability of developing pneumonia in a malnourished child.
