Abstract

INTRODUCTION. Modern hospital units respond to a business vision with measures of objectives and achievement of results based on management indicators. OBJECTIVE To find out if the management indicators influenced the productivity of the Pediatric Surgery Technical Unit of the Carlos Andrade Marin Specialties Hospital in Quito, from 2015 to 2018. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Cross-sectional analytical study that evaluated the following management indicators: need, efficacy, quality and productivity: outpatient consultation, emergencies, surgeries performed, hospital and urodynamic discharges. Median, ranges and percentage were considered for the descriptive analysis and the Chi2 test. The data was obtained from the AS / 400 system and was processed in the International Business Machines Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, Version 20. program. RESULTS. The need had differences in the series between the number of ideal and real beds
(p = 0,02). Regarding efficacy, no significant differences are evident. The quality included the analysis of variables such as: the average stay with 3,5 days; a mortality of 2,25 per 1 000 discharges in 4 years; 0,5% of nosocomial infections; 18 surgical re-operations; 20 complications; the report of 8 quasi events, 10 events and 2 sentinel events and the elaboration of 11 medical protocols. Productivity: 6 075 external consultations; 495 emergencies; 988 surgeries; 701 hospital discharges and 100 urodynamics. CONCLUSION. The increase in beds throughout the period and the decrease in hospital stay, improved the productivity of the unit based on the analysis of management indicators.
