Abstract

Introduction: The main objective of cataract surgery is providing a good visual status, avoiding the use of correctives after surgery. To do this, it is necessary to correct astigmatism that affects 15% to 29% of patients with cataracts. The best and safest option to correct this issue is through the use of toric lenses. Methods: A case series study carried out at Santa Lucia Eyes Clinic in Quito Ecuador; from October de 2015 to October de 2016. Results: From 47 patients, 75 eyes were included in the study, with an average (SD) age of 73 (±10) yearold, with a similar number of men and women. In general, more than 80% of the patients had a lower astigmatism. If we analyze quantitative data, we will find that the enhancement of the OR was 1.7 to 0.4 and in the OS from 1.5 to 0.4; both relations were significant (p 0.0001). Comparing both, preoperative and postoperative status, we saw that the differences of the average of logmar of visual acuity in OR and OS were also significant. Discussion: We should always consider astigmatism correction in patients with cataracts, in order to obtain optimum results of visual acuity covering the needs and demands of the patients.
