Introduction: The obscure gastrointestinal bleeding represents 5% of all gastrointestinal bleedings and the endoscopy capsule is the diagnostic method of choice since it allows to view and locate the site and the cause of bleeding. Its effectiveness as a diagnostic test ranges from 44% to 82 %. The main objective was evaluating the effectiveness of the capsule endoscopy in patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding admitted to the gastroenterology department at Carlos Andrade Marin Hospital, from October 2012 to October 2014. Methods: Retrospective study that reviewed medical records, using nonprobability sampling for convenience, from all patients that underwent endoscopy capsule exams, type SB and PillCam COLON, at the Department of Gastroenterology. Results: Sixty-one endoscopy capsules were placed. A 63.9% of the total sample were placed in outpatient consultation, the total recording time for each PillCam capsule endoscopye SB was 12 hours and 6 Minutes, and positive results were obtained in 50 patients (81.9%). The most frequent lesions found were vascular and located in the duodenum. Discusion: Endoscopy capsule is the method of choice For diagnosing gastrointestinal obscure bleeding. It is effective, minimally invasive, with good tolerance and few complications.
