The main objective of the Prevention of Cervical Cancer Program
was to target women between 30 and 65 years participating in
preventive medicine programs of the ambulatory care clinics and
promote a detection system for high-risk human papillomavirus
oncogenic infection as a screening strategy and for early diagnosis
of pre – malignant cervical and malignant cervical cancer. The
medical staff at clinics in the north zone of Quito were trained
for care and monitoring based on the designed algorithm. Endoexo
cervical brushing samples were collected since April 2012
and sent to the Pathology Service of HCAM for the analysis
with Cobas ® 4800 system. 10 011 samples from18 clinics were
processed (monthly average: 800 samples).
The overall prevalence of high-risk HPV infection was 11.9%
(95% confidence interval: 11.3-12.5). For HPV-18, the prevalence
was 0.6% (95% confidence interval: 0.5-0.8); for HPV-16 the
prevalence was 2.1% (95% confidence interval: 1.8-2.4) and
for other high risk HPV genotypes was 10.1% (95% confidence
interval: 9.5-10.6).
The implementation of the Prevention of Cervical Cancer Program
in HCAM, using analysis of high-risk HPV infection is a strategy
that has a strong adherence of patients and is an important tool for
prevention, diagnosis and identification of pre-malignant lesions
using liquid-based cytology, colposcopy and histopathology.
