Introduction. Being an overweight/obese is associated with important risks for both physical and mental health and is present in epidemic proportions both in Ecuador and in an international level. Both social and psychological factors, influence the etiology of this illness. Objective. The present investigation looks to establish the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and being overweight/obese (Body Mass Index) in the Ecuadorian population. Materials and Methods. One hundred overweight-obese adults that attended the Obesity Clinic at Carlos Andrade Marín Hospital. A sociodemographic survey of the authors´ design and the Spanish version of the Big Five Personality Trait Short Questionnaire were applied to the target population. Results. No significant relationship was found between the Big Five personality traits and being overweight-obese (BMI) in the population studied. Conclusions. In Western cultures, investigators have found a consistent positive relationship between neuroticism and obesity and a consistent inverse relationship between conscientiousness and obesity. Nevertheless, studies in Asian populations and Brazil have not found the same relationship. The high prevalence of chronic stress in the population studied could be another possible explanation for obesity in the Ecuadorian context.
