Abstract

It is difficult to know the actual number of bites by poisonous snakes in the world; the fact is that snakebites by frequency of occurrence and morbidity causing represent a serious public health problem in tropical countries.
The World Health Organization estimates that worldwide annually are five million of snakebites, with 125 000 deaths a year half of them die poisonings. In South America, Brazil is the country with the highest number of accidents of this type, has nearly 20 000 cases per year, followed by Perú (4500), Venezuela (2 500-3 000), Colombia (2675), Ecuador (1 200-1 600) and Argentina (1150-1250) .In Brazil, the regions most at risk are the central, west and north. The genus
Bothrops is responsible for 90% of accidents caused by poisonous snakes in Brazil. Proper Identification of the type of snake involved in the accident is crucial in determining the most appropriate treatment to follow.
The aim of this study was to evalúate the epidemiológica!, clinical accidents snakebites in children and adults hospitalized in the Emergency Hospital Dr. Gustavo Dominguez Z in the period January 2012 to November 2012.
