Pain is now recognized as the fifth vital sign. Early diagnosis and adequate treatment are currently indicators of hospital quality of care, leading to third level hospitals worldwide to implement pain units and developing multidisciplinary pain clinics. In the year 2000, Carlos Andrade Marín Hospital opened a pain clinc to treat patients with acute and chronic pain. This initiative, welcomed by patients and physicians from differente specialities, was supported by hospital managers in the aim of filling the gap in the care of patients that desperately needed propiate management of chronic pain. Since the year 2011, the pain clinic has experience a sudden and sustained growth. Here we presenta a cronology of this service and its projection to the future.
