One of the most common complications of endotracheal intubation is postoperative sore throat. There are a few demonstrated ways to prevent it, but the gold standart treatment has not been established. Objectives: the objective of this study is to assess the efficacy of two treatments: the use of oral lidocaine versus lollypops to treat patients with postoperative sore throat in the recovery room. Methods: a blinded controlled randomized trial was performed in patients with postoperative sore throat in the recovery room after general anesthesia. Results: 128 pacientes were studied, 47 in group I, 32 in group II and 48 in group III. The treatment was effective in 44% in group 1, 97% in group II and 93% in group III. There was not statistical difference between groups II and III (lidocaine and lollypops), but significative diference was demostrated between group I (placebo) and groups II and III (RR 0.45, IC 0,30 - 0,59) and between these last two there were no difference in resolution time or relapse. Conclusions: oral lidocaine and oral sweets are both equally effective to treat post operative sore throat in the recovery room.
