Abstract

INTRODUCTION. The occurrence of a first ischemic stroke involves significant morbidity and risk of recurrence of a new event where risk factors have a preponderant role. OBJECTIVES. Demonstrate that there is greater exposure to risk factors in recurrent strokes than in single strokes; identify the degree of association of each of the risk factors with recurrent stroke. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Case-control study, population: 1 011 with a sample of 509 patients, obtained from admission to the Neurology Technical Unit of the Carlos Marín Specialty Hospital, from january 2009 to december 2015, with a diagnosis of ischemic stroke first / recurrent, data obtained from the AS400 computer system were: age, sex, number / type of risk factors: arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, atrial fibrillation, ischemic heart disease, dyslipidemia, smoker, congestive heart failure. The strength of association was estimated through the OR and its 95% CI. RESULTS. Average age 71,5 years, 57,4% (292; 509); corresponded to the male gender. Chi-square analysis of qualitative variables and risk estimation using contingency tables showed an association between exposure to traditional modifiable risk factors and stroke recurrence with an OR 1,30 95% CI (0,69-2,45) p=0,41; multivariate analysis using logistic regression for each risk factor and recurrent stroke showed statistical association: arterial hypertension OR 2,05; diabetes mellitus OR 1,52; atrial fibrillation 1,83. CONCLUSION. Data from this study demonstrated a risk association for recurrent stroke with three traditional modifiable risk factors.
