Abstract

Introduction: There is concern about the quality of care in relation to working conditions guaranteeing the institution. The aim of the study was to determine labor and nursing health conditions and their relationship to the quality of service given to users. Methods: The sample consisted of 381 nurses, 301 users of “Carlos Andrade Marín” hospital. The study was descriptive, cross sectional. Results: Nurses have mostly rotating work schedules without two continuous days of mandatory weekly rest. They undergo high intensity working conditions without receiving extra payment for night shifts nor supplementary or complementary hours. There is no child-care service for their children. Main working risks perceived by those surveyed were: exposure to punctures; permanent exposure to white-light all day and night long; excessive noise; inadequate temperature; poor ventilation; potential chemical, radiation and biohazards exposure. Main health problems were stress, fatigue, muscle crumps, abdominal pain. Hospital users rate high the quality of nursing care in terms of hygiene and physical comfort, medication received, physical security and procedures authorization process. Among the least valued items were: spiritual, social, emotional support and guidance on institutional rules. Discusion: Though nursing care quality is high rated, working conditions do not match to the work nature and could cause health problems.
