Introduction. Worldwide, gastric cancer ranks fifth in incidence and second in mortality. In 2016, according to the Ecuadorian Institute of Statistics and Census, gastric cancer was the most frequent cause of cancer death in men and second among women in Ecuador. Objective. To identify sociodemographic and histopathological characteristics associated risk factors and current therapies. Material and methods. Cross-sectional descriptive study based on 236 patients with gastric cancer treated between January and December 2016. Results. Prevalence of gastric cancer was 61% in men and 39% in women. Mean age: 68 years. Associated factors: Helicobacter pylori 46%, alcohol 36%, tobacco 35%, family history of gastric cancer 12%. The most frequent types of gastric cancer found were: adenocarcinoma 89%, GIST 5.9%, neuroen docrine tumors 2.7%, MALT lymphoma 2.1% and Schwannoma 0.4 %. Lauren’s classification states 60% were diffuse adenocarcinomas vs 40% intestinal adenocarcinomas. 84% patients were in advanced stage, mostly TNM IV. Main treatment: surgery plus adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Conclusions. Frequency of advanced gastric cancer in this hospital hasn’t changed for the past 30 years. Prevalence of H. pylori in patients with gastric cancer was lower than reported in other developing countries (i.e., Colombia, Peru, etc.). Prevalence of gastric neuroendocrine tumors and GIST is double when compared with international literature.
