SUMMARY
Objetives: determine the safety of ambulatory implantation of cardiac stimulation devices.
Patients and methods: we performed a cohort study that includes 38 patients with the indication of pacing for atrioventricular block. The intervention was performed as outpatients and compared with 38 hospitalized control patients with similar indications. Complications were observed up to six weeks after the intervention.
Results: there were 14% of complications in the total. Thirteen in the outpatient group vs. 16% in the hospitalized group (p 0.74, RR 0.94). The major complications observed only in the control group (non-ambulatory) were pneumothorax and displacements of ventricular lead requiring reoperation or hospitalization. Neither group showed mortality. Conclusion: implantation of cardiac stimulation devices in
the outpatient basis is feasible and safe, with a complication rate similar to that of inpatients, meaning significant savings in resources.
