38% of patients with neuromuscular block (NMB) present residual paralysis after general anestesia. For this reason the reversion of NMB is a basic element for patient safety, which only recently could have been done with neostigmine that acts indirectly and has dangerous side effects. Since 2008 sugammadex completely changed the management of NMB, although it has not yet been approved by FDA, it is been used by European, Asian and Latinamerican countries with reliable effects and safety. At the Carlos Andrade Marin Hospital (HCAM) in Quito, a guideline was designed to control the use of sugammadex. In this observational
descriptive study, 284 patients received NMB with rocuronium and reversed with sugammadex were analysed. The results are equivalent with other studies worldwide, 97% of patients were extubated without complications and side effects. With these findings the anesthesia department will establish indications for the use of sugammadex in this hospital.
