Abstract

The origin of genital prolapse is multifactorial, acting mainly in the pelvic support structures. The most common causes are multiparity, pregnancies and deliveries of macrosomic fetuses, traumatic births, previous surgery of the pelvic floor and tissue characteristics. The tissue and ligament damage are the origin in the pathophysiology of urinary incontinence, cystocele, rectocele and histerocele. There are several surgical options for repair, however, the recurrence rate explains why we are researching and making new advances such as the use of prosthetic mesh where statistics show a significant benefit and efficiency, which are much higher than the other techniques when the indications for use are appropiate. The recurrence of cystocele repaired with monofilament macropore polypropylene mesh does not exceed 3%, allowing ensure that it is a technique more effectively than before.(1, 2, 3).
